The Junior Development Program includes different levels for children between ages of 5 through 17. The program provides a structured and fun framework for learning the game of tennis.

The Junior Competition Program is designed for the more advanced player. The program stresses mental discipline, conditioning and refining racquet skills. Match play performance will improve with on-court coaching. A Celebration of the Sport of a Lifetime: Train with some of the areas”s top certified tennis coaches and former touring professionals on three different playing surfaces. Fitness, match play, competition, and life skills are offered for ranked players and those who want to work hard. The week promises to be like no other tennis experience in the area. Ages 7-17.

Daily Tennis Will Include:

  • Monday 9am-3:30pm at the Racquet Club at Hobbit’s Glen: Clay court training, tennis skills and fitness
  • Tuesday 9am-3:30pm at the Racquet Club at Hobbits Glen: Clay court training and how to carry yourself as an athlete
  • Wednesday 9am-3:30pm at the Columbia Athletic Club and /or Wilde Lake Tennis Club: Hard court training and conference call with an ATP or WTA player
  • Thursday 9am-3:30pm at  Columbia Athletic Club and/or Wilde Lake Tennis Club: Hard court training, match play and public speaking exercises
  • Friday 9am-noon at the Racquet Club at Hobbit’s Glen: Clay court training, review and Team Tennis event

The Junior Tennis Program welcomes boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 17. The program is scheduled Mondays through Fridays for two-week sessions (and one one-week session), beginning June 26.

Our mission is to provide an organized and goal-oriented program for both development and competitive tennis players. The curriculum is designed to challenge and enable the athlete to develop their tennis skills and improve their match/tournament play. The program mirrors our Junior Development and competitive Junior Pathway, with the athletes being grouped by skill level and age.

The program is taught by a team of certified CA professionals and led by Competitive Tennis Coordinator Maurice Willacy, along with our team of certified coaches.

LEVEL 7 (Red Balls) – 36-foot Court – AGES 5-6

A program of movement, balance, coordinated and motor skill development with a focus on self and partner rallying skills in the Micro Court. Both reception and projection activities will be emphasized. Children will learn the first stages of cooperative tennis. The children will learn how to initiate a rally, how to move and judge a ball (reception and centering skills), how to control the racquet at the contact point and control the height, direction and depth to be successful on the 36-foot court. They will learn adaptive skills that will be the foundation of their future tennis development.

Children will learn the skills of the 36-foot court. By the end of this program, a child should be able to play mini-tennis using a full or abbreviated serving motion. The children will learn how to move effectively so as to ensure good position and balance for each shot. They will be taught how to adapt to different situations and to control a follow-through on both the forehand and the backhand ground strokes.

Children will continue to learn the skills of the 36-foot court. By the end of this program, a child should be able to move their opponent with intention by controlling the direction of the ball. They should be able to use a full or abbreviated serving motion. The children will learn how to move effectively so as to ensure good position and balance for each shot. They will be taught how to adapt to different situations and how to compete in 8 and under events

Students will learn the basics of tactical play as they transition from the 36-foot court to the 60-fot court for singles and doubles. Swing rhythm on the forehands and backhands will be emphasized. The children will be introduced to topspin and will learn how to differentiate between a volley action and a ground stroke action. A variety of serve progressions will be taught. Serve and return of serve will be covered in each class.

Students will experience the five play situations and will refine their tactical/technical skills. Concepts of offense/defense will be introduced in both singles and doubles. Ball control exercises that enhance consistency, direction, depth and spin will be stressed. A variety of adaptive skills will be trained using dead ball drills, live ball drills and competitive play situations in all areas of the court. Students should compete in Junior Match Play.

Designed for players interested in developing skills essential for competition. Students will focus on improving tactical and technical game based application. Attention will also be on improving match play performance with emphasis on footwork and conditioning, match play tactics, mechanics, mental toughness and sportsmanship. Players must make a commitment to developing the mental as well as physical aspects of the game. Workouts will be intensive and demanding. Competing in Junior Tennis Match Play/Junior team tennis matches is strongly encouraged. Tournament preparation information will be provided.
