Lake Elkhorn Dam Inspection
CA will be lowering the water level of Lake Elkhorn to perform an engineering inspection of the dam spillway weir. The purpose of the inspection is to evaluate existing conditions for future dam renovations to stabilize the concrete spillway. The water level drawdown process will take approx. 4-6 days, and we anticipate that sections of shoreline and lake bottom may be exposed for a short period. The inspection will take less than one day and, once completed, the Lake water levels will begin to revert to normal levels. The drawdown is scheduled to occur in March. If you have any questions, please call CA's Open Space Management Office at 410-312-6330.

The Lake Elkhorn Parking Lot and Pavilion is opened temporarily
Completion of the Lake Elkhorn Dredging project is expected to resume summer 2012. In an effort to make the facility available to the public during this time, we have opened the parking lot and pavilion. The parking lot accessed off of Broken Land Parkway is no longer ADA accessible as it is a temporary opening. To accommodate for the loss of access, additional spaces have been designated as H/C Accessible in the existing parking lot off of Cradlerock Way, located on Dockside Lane. For timely updates on the Lake Elkhorn dredging project, please visit
ColumbiaAssociation.org/Dredging.
Pathway Closure Notice
Due to work being done on the Lake Kittamaqundi Dredging Project, the pathway from Town Center to the Kennedy Gardens has been closed to the public. A temporary path from the Route 29 Pedestrian bridge to GGP's lower parking lot has been installed and directional signage has been provided. This pathway bypasses the work areas and maintains access to Town Center from Oakland Mills. The duration of the path closure is not known at this time. For more information on CA's dredging projects, please visit

Little Patuxent Parallel Sewer Interceptor Construction Continues
The Howard County construction project to parallel the existing sanitary sewer main in the vicinity of Lake Kittamaqundi and Leaf Trader Way continues on schedule and should be completed by late April 2012. The sewer contractor has also begun phased work near Columbia Road and Ten Mills Road, and on the Fairway Hill Golf Course property that will be completed by March 30, 2012. The project will include construction of approx. 3200 linear ft. of sanitary sewer main. During the project brief road closures may occur in the area. For questions or concerns, please contact the Howard County Govt. Public Works Customer Service at 410-313-3440 or
publicworks@howardcountymd.gov.
Lake Kittamaqundi Dredging Site Notice: Please avoid walking on the newly-created wetlands and peninsulas
Once the tender wetlands are placed, they need to remain undisturbed in order for them to have enough time to get established and rooted so they can perform their 'wetland' function properly, like filtrating the water, providing habitat to wildlife, etc. If these emerging wetlands are walked on, it may imped their ability to become established and they may die, meaning CA would have to pay for the re-planting of these areas at future dates.
Ten Year Lake and Large Pond Management Plan
As part of CA's ongoing stewardship of the Columbia lakes, staff has begun the process to create a 10-year lake and large pond management plan. This plan would focus on all aspects of lake and large pond management including sediment removal, submerged aquatic vegetation, wildlife management and community engagement. Under the management plan regularly scheduled lake and large pond surveys would be conducted to better understand the impacts of large weather events such as hurricanes Irene and Lee and also to provide quantifiable trigger points for future maintenance and dredging projects.
Howard County Parallel Sewer Project Update - Sections of Fairway Hills Golf Club closed
On December 1, the Howard County Sewer contractor will begin with the initial steps in establishing the access road from Columbia Road along the golf cart path adjacent to green at the sixth hole, and also opening up the limit of disturbance across the fairway on the fifth hole to lay piple. Please note: That section of the golf course will be closed for the duration of the winter. The contractor is currently on schedule for completing the work in the Fairway Hills Golf Course by March 21, 2012, weather permitting.
May 12, 2011 - BGE will be re-clearing the Linden Church Gas Pipeline easement that travels through parts of five villages in Columbia and terminates in Elkridge.
There are segments of the easement that are on CA property and there will be some impact to trees and vegetation. BGE understands the value of trees within communities and strives to balance that with the need to manage and operate our facilities safely and reliably. For questions or concerns, contact BGE at 410-685-0123 or
