4 great dates at CA for Valentine’s Day

By Tracy Dye, February 2018

February is the month of love, but when you live in Howard County, it is also the month of frigid temperatures and unruly forecasts that can relegate you and your partner to hanging out in your living room.

Though we always encourage people to exercise — couples who work out together are far more likely to stick with their programs than those who work out alone — we understand if you’re looking for something a little less sweaty. Fortunately, CA has a variety of events and activities that can make for the perfect date.

Lace Up

Looking for a great way to break the ice? Lace up your skates and glide hand-in-hand with someone special at Columbia Ice Rink.

Public skate sessions are offered daily at the ice rink, and admission is free for CA Fit&Play, Play, 5Day Golf&Play, and Golf Fit&Play members (excludes skate rental).

If you don’t have one of the aforementioned memberships, this will still make for an affordable and fun date; admission is $7 for other CA members, $8 for Columbia Cardholders and $9 for non-members.

For more information and schedules, call the public session hotline at 410-730-0321 or visit ColumbiaAssociation.org/icerink.

Sip and Savor

Enjoy a sampling of fine wines and artisan chocolates during a special pre-Valentine’s Day event at Haven on the Lake on Thursday, Feb. 8, 5-8pm. The event will also feature local vendors and pop-up shops, so you can find the perfect gift for your significant other.

But indulging in some decadent treats isn’t the only way to unwind with your partner. Haven’s healing environments include these soothing amenities: a hot tub, steam bath, sauna, crystal salt therapy room, tropical rain shower, cold plunge and warm water pool.

Daily admission to Haven’s healing environments is free for Haven members and $25 for non-members.

Reenact That Famous Scene from “Ghost”

Does the chemistry between you and your partner rival that of Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore à la the 1990 hit movie “Ghost?”

On Valentine’s Day, the Clay for Couples workshop (Wednesday, Feb. 14, 7-9pm) allows couples to learn side-by-side to make cups, vases, trays, containers and other functional objects. No experience is required; $40 for CA members/Columbia Cardholders and $50 for non-members.

The Clay Play workshop (Friday, Feb. 9, 6:30-9pm) is another great option for couples or friends (Valentine’s Day, anyone?) looking for a fun evening out. Learn the basic methods of slab handbuilding with clay to construct unique decorative projects such as jewelry and candleholders. Projects will then be stamped, carved and painted with colorful underglazes. Feel free to bring your own snacks and beverages. Ages 21 and older; $40 for CA members/Columbia Cardholders and $50 for non-members.

For more information and to register, call 410-730-0075 or visit ColumbiaArtCenter.org.

Dine at The Turn House

Although it serves as Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club’s matching top-flight restaurant, you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy The Turn House. Owner and chef Thomas Zippelli returned to the Howard County area and opened the farm-to-table restaurant after working at New York City’s Eleven Madison Park and The French Laundry in Yountville, California — both of which have earned the coveted three Michelin Stars (only 14 restaurants in the entire country have that designation).
