Columbia creates! Workshops for all ages; create projects in hours and create memories that last years
By David Greisman, October 2017
Rome wasn’t built in a day, but you can create some fun projects in no more than a few hours spent at one of Columbia Art Center’s workshops.
The workshops range all age groups and media. There are activities for kids, programs pairing parents and children, and team-building activities where co-workers can paint a masterpiece together for their office.
The full schedule can be found at ColumbiaArtCenter.org. Here are the highlights of what’s available in the coming months. For more information on any of these workshops, please contact Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 or Art.Staff@ColumbiaAssociation.org.
Just for kids
Columbia Art Center’s School’s Out Program provides exciting days of creative fun when school is out, sending kids home with cool projects. Kids ages 6-14 should pack a lunch, but they will also receive a snack and beverage later in the afternoon. Each session runs from 9am-3:30pm, with a different theme on each day. Upcoming sessions include Friday, Oct. 20; Wednesday, Nov. 22; and Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 27-29. Please contact Columbia Art Center for each session’s topic.
Super Sunday workshops are held one afternoon each month. Advance registration is required for these two fun sessions: Spooky Halloween Decorations (Sunday, Oct. 22, 12:30- 2pm, ages 5-8) and Metal Magic Embossed Picture and Decorative Frame (Sunday, Nov. 19, 12:30-2pm, ages 9-13). They are $15 per child, $10 for each additional child. There’s also a Gingerbread House Workshop for all ages on Sunday, Dec. 17, 12:30- 2:30pm ($20 per house created, $10 per additional child/house).
Family friendly workshops
The second Sunday of each month brings a free Family Art Frenzy workshop from 1-3pm, where kids can experiment with mixed media. All ages are welcome; children younger than 8 must have a guardian accompanying them. Upcoming sessions are Oct. 15 (Maniac Monster Puppets); Nov. 12 (Brilliant Leaf Print Placemats); and Dec. 10 (Upcycle Penguin Ornaments).
The Mommy and Me Art Play Workshop is for kids ages 2-5. Parents and toddlers explore colors, shapes and textures using age-appropriate tools, plus there’s a brief story time for children to learn how their masterpieces connect to the real world. Each workshop is from 12:30-2pm on these upcoming dates: Sunday, Oct. 22 (Halloween Creatures and Pumpkins); Sunday, Nov. 19 (A Thanksgiving Feast); and Sunday, Dec. 17 (My Winter Friends That Love Snow). Prices: $15 for adult and child, Columbia residents; $25 for adult and child, nonresidents; $5 for each additional child.
Fun workshops for adults
Show off your state pride at the “Everything Maryland” wood workshop, where you can tackle the standout flag, the black-eyed Susan or the blue crab. Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 17 (6:30-9pm) and Wednesday, Nov. 15 (6:30-9pm). The workshop is open to anyone age 17 and older. Price: $45 for Columbia residents, $55 for nonresidents.
Paint Night parties are great for birthdays and other events for anyone age 16 and older. Pick a design to recreate and then receive step-by- step guidance. Parties include two hours of instruction, plus one hour for refreshments, setup and cleanup. Early reservations are recommended.
Columbia Art Center is also a great venue for companies who want to hold creative team-building activities in a relaxing atmosphere. You are welcome to bring refreshments or use a catering service. Available activities including individual paintings, collaborative projects, and a mystery masterpiece — an instructor takes you through the process step-by-step until the painting reveals itself at the end.
And there’s even more, including workshops on ceramics, Zentangle®, etegami, floral design, fused glass, painting and drawing. Dates and prices are available by contacting Columbia Art Center.
