MyRide: How Combining Music and Video Improves Exercise Performance
The combination of music and video helps to create feelings of confidence by stimulating areas of the brain that complete emotional processing. This has the potential to stimulate self-efficacy and emotional engagement, and therefore enhance motivation during exercise.
One benefit of music and video lies in the intervention that either or both can furnish. By distracting the participant from unpleasant sensations during high-intensity exercise; music and video (whether separately or in combination) can move attention from internal focus on, for example, burning in the legs, to an external focus on beautiful scenery and rhythmic music, resulting in the participant reaching a hill summit while barely noticing the time that has passed or the “distance” ridden.
Another example might lie in the participant’s ability to work through a level of resistance that previously was discouragingly difficult when tried without video. These effects may be completely unconscious but are highly effective.
