Out in the Open (Space): Updates for Week of Jan. 24, 2021
January 24, 2021
We are still working hard to maintain everything going on outdoors!
Here’s what’s going on this week in Open Space:
- We are super excited for our Adopt-a-Spot program that launched just last month. It gives trained Weed Warriors an opportunity to commit to removing invasive species in a specific area in the community and watch the progress. Want to make a difference? Check out this article for the details.
- We know the area around our stream restoration project in Harpers Choice does not look like it used to. CA is working with Ecotone to make sure that portion of our waterways are as close to the natural state they were in before the area was developed. Ecotone will begin live stake planting in mid-February. We expect the growth of native species to happen quickly once spring arrives. We’d like to extend our sincerest gratitude to those who have been impacted by this project. If you’d like to learn more about why CA is changing how water flows there and why that’s important to the future health of our lakes, check out this article. Keep an eye out for an update soon!
- Open Space and Facilities Services Director Dennis Mattey presented at last week’s Virtual Town Hall, answering some of the questions that came in about pathways, Open Space and other topics. You can pull up his presentation on our YouTube page’s Virtual Town Hall playlist.
- Keep those wildlife photos coming! If you follow CA on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, you’ve probably noticed some awesome pictures getting shared. Most of those are from community members. Tag your favorite with #ColumbiaWildlife so we can track them down and share them with our followers (like this one 👇🤩).

- In case you missed it, our very own Jeremy Scharfenberg talks about air exchange rates and how that concept applies to our facilities. Blame the camera guy for the starting shot 😆.
