Calling All Artists!
Show the world what you can do with a blank canvas and register for a Columbia Association (CA) art class. Offered throughout the year and held at Columbia Art Center, there are classes for artists of all ages, including children, teens and adults. Choose from pen and ink, watercolor, pastels, acrylics, and even colored pencils. Just bring your creative energy and remember — even Michelangelo had to start somewhere!
Acrylic PaintingUsing various mediums and gels, learn the characteristics and basic techniques of acrylics plus more advanced techniques for creating surfaces and glazes. Beginning/advanced-level students welcome. Supply list will be provided at the time of registration.
Beginning/Intermediate Oil PaintingPut aside those fears of oil painting and discover its charm and beauty. Learn to mix colors and apply paints. Create paintings from sources such as still lifes, landscapes, master paintings, photographs and portraits. Beginning/continuing students are welcome to take the class. Supply list will be provided at first class.
Block, Print, Repeat: Autumn LeavesLearn to design and carve your own block for printing on fabric and paper. You will learn how to transfer images, design your own, and build repeat patterns, as well as gain a full introduction to the different kinds of supplies and tools used in this exciting process. All materials are provided.

Charcoal Workshop: Smartphone Photos to DrawingsNEW! Use your own photos to create exciting and believable drawings and explore line, shape, value and texture to build beautiful landscape drawings. Learn to create light and movement. Bring several of your own photos printed out in black and white. We will work with subtractive and additive drawing techniques using a variety of erasers, charcoal, compressed charcoal, and white charcoal pencils. Beginner to advanced students welcome. All drawing supplies included. Paper may be purchased from instructor at class.
Dabble in WatercolorTry your hand at watercolor painting in a comfortable learning atmosphere. You will be instructed in fun hands-on exercises, as well as have the opportunity to watch instructor demonstrations. Bring a friend for a fun and creative evening. All supplies included.
Design a Tiny House (Paper Mache Sculpture)If you’ve ever wanted to design and build a tabletop tiny house, this class is for you! Have fun creating your own tiny house sculpture, which will be approximately 6” x 12” x 4”. Design, construct, papier-mâché and paint your house. Explore techniques in painting and mixed media to add personal touches. Open to all levels. All supplies will be included.
Dry Media Workshop: Atmosphere and AbstractionNEW! Combine atmosphere and abstraction in landscape drawings using charcoal and muted pastels. We will explore energetic drawing and sfumato techniques using powdered, vine, compressed charcoals, and a touch of pastel. Bring several of your own B&W hardcopy photos of dramatic landscapes. Artist demo and discussion, drawing time and critique. Beginner to advanced students welcome. All drawing supplies included. Paper may be purchased from instructor at class.
Encaustic PaintingBack by popular demand! Encaustic painting is an easy-to-learn technique using colored pigments mixed with hot wax. Enjoy incorporating photographs, collages, fabrics, drawings and paintings into your encaustic masterpiece. Tools and techniques will be introduced and demonstrated; the class is suitable both for beginners and those with experience. All supplies included. Bring your own lunch; beverages and dessert will be provided.

Learning to Work with Charcoal and GraphiteNew! Draw from still life and landscape photos to create dynamic compositions using versatile charcoal and graphite. Explore dramatic combinations of drawing techniques on both white and color papers. Artist demo, lots of individual help, and short group critiques. Open Creative StudioNEW! Looking for something fun and different to do in the afternoon? We invite you to explore your creativity while making art at Columbia Art Center. Enjoy a brief lesson on materials and then experiment, play, tinker, invent and create. Freestyling and independent projects are encouraged. You are welcome to sign up for the six-session course or drop in for individual sessions — whatever works for your schedule!
Paint Night at Haven on the LakeBring your friends and enjoy a relaxing evening of painting at Haven on the Lake’s calm and beautiful café. Under the step-by-step guidance of a Columbia Art Center instructor, you’ll create your very own masterpiece. After you complete your work of art, enjoy the restorative amenities at Haven! Note: Haven on the Lake is located at 10275 Little Patuxent Parkway, on the lower level of Whole Foods. The painting activity takes 90 minutes. The restorative amenities are open until 10pm.
Painting Exploration on Yupo: Artist DemonstrationIn a step-by-step demonstration of her unique methods and techniques, you will watch as Kathy Daywalt manipulates water-based pigments when painting on synthetic Yupo paper rather than traditional paper. Kathy will show how easy it is to move paint around the surface of Yupo, which is technically made of plastic. Kathy will also demonstrate how
she uses stamps and found objects to incorporate the rich patterns and textures that define her artwork.
