Well, it’s a wrap! The 2017 Columbia Teen Idol was crowned on Oct. 15 at the 15th annual Hear My Voice Teen Day’s Columbia Teen Idol competition.

Congratulations to Nicole Wildy — our 2017 Columbia Teen Idol winner! Nicole sang “Rise Up” by Audra Day.

Second place went to Andrew Vesey, who performed an original rap called “Freedom.” Third place went to Abby McDonough, who sang “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. Abby also won the People’s Choice Award. We congratulate all of our finalists for an awesome job!

The next rounds of auditions are expected to begin in September 2018. Stay tuned for dates, times and locations.

The competition is open to Howard County performers from sixth grade through 12th grade. All Teen Idol finalists must agree to participate in a community service project organized by CA’s Youth and Teen Center.

Date: Monday, June 11, 4-8pm

Join the Youth and Teen Center’s young chess players and your fellow neighbors of all ages at CA’s Community Chess Day!

Anyone can play — beginners and masters, young and old, and any level or age in-between. Community Chess Day is on Monday, June 11. Join any time between 4-8pm at the Youth and Teen Center at The Barn, 5853 Robert Oliver Place in the Oakland Mills Village Center.

Play for bragging rights. We’ll provide boards or you may bring your own. Light refreshments will be served. And you’ll get a chance to play with the YTC’s CheckMates Chess Club, which gets mentored in both the game and life every week by members of the Howard County Police Department.
