Pickleball: The Fastest-Growing Sport in America

September 17, 2021

Did you know pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America? Five years ago, there were about 500,000 active players (known as “picklers”). Today, that number is estimated to be around 2.5 million!

According to CA pickleball coordinator Duane Sinclair, part of the appeal is that you can play at any age. All you need is a pickleball paddle, a ball and a net. Whether you’re a tennis lover or have zero background in racquet sports, it’s a sociable sport that’s fairly easy to learn…what’s not to love?

Who plays pickleball?

There’s a wide variety of people who call themselves picklers — what they have in common is a desire to have fun! Picklers are a super welcoming and friendly bunch, so there’s no intimidation factor as a beginner and you’re guaranteed to make new friends. There’s few other sports you can play with every generation of your family, from tots to grandparents.

Why is pickleball so popular?

Pickleball offers countless benefits, from aerobic exercise to social connection to stress relief.

For former tennis players who want to give their joints a break, it’s the perfect low-impact way to stay active. Since the court is smaller, it’s less intense than tennis and welcomes more opportunities for interaction with your fellow picklers.

It’s equally welcoming for those with no athletic background. After all, if you’ve ever seen or played ping-pong, you’re well on your way to understanding the rules of the game.
