What is BodyPump?
BodyPump – known as “the original barbell class” – is a strength training workout created by the Les Mills fitness company. It’s built around Les Mills’ trademark “Rep Effect,” which focuses on lifting light weights at high repetitions – making BodyPump ideal for anyone who wants to get toned without adding bulk or muscle.
In BodyPump classes, Les Mills certified fitness instructors lead attendees through high-repetition weightlifting, using a bar (with or without weights) and an aerobic step. By the end of this total body workout, you’ll feel the burn everywhere – all the way from your arms to your core to your legs.
Preparing for a BodyPump class
You don’t have to do much to prepare, but there are a couple of things to know before coming to Les Mills’ BodyPump. For starters, BodyPump is suitable for people of all experience levels, so you don’t need to be a fitness pro to join. If you’re nervous about the weights being too heavy, you can use just the bar (without weights) in your exercises before adding weights at your own pace.
In terms of what to bring, all you’ll need are athletic shoes, a water bottle, and a towel. All of the exercise equipment – including the weights and step – will be provided in class.
If you’re working out during the day or at night, try to eat a meal three to four hours or a snack one to two hours ahead of your workout. But if you’re a morning exerciser, Les Mills recommends eating a carb- and protein-packed meal within two hours of your class. You should also be sure to stay well-hydrated before and after your workout.
