Rip Esselstyn is a former firefighter who can help you extinguish your unhealthy eating habits.
Esselstyn — an author and nutrition guru who’s written multiple books and appeared on several TV shows — will speak in Columbia this March at a free event that is open to the public.
He is the featured speaker at the kickoff event for Columbia Association’s new Healthy Eating Series, a fun and informative way to learn about living a healthier lifestyle.
The event will take place on Monday, March 25 from 6-9:30pm at The Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts, 5460 Trumpeter Road, adjacent to Wilde Lake High School in Columbia. While your presence is encouraged at the theatre, a live streaming link will also be available to watch the presentation online.
Registration is required at healthyeating2019.eventbrite.com.
Throughout the event, there will be health organizations providing on-site screenings and wellness vendors offering educational materials. Light refreshments will be served.
Esselstyn, who will speak at 7pm, was a triathlete before joining the fire department in Austin, Texas. When a firefighter colleague was in declining health, Esselstyn developed a diet for him that was plant-based and centered on whole foods — which are as close to their natural form as possible, barely processed or refined if at all, and have no additive or other artificial substances.
That led to Esselstyn’s book, The Engine 2 Diet, and follow-up installments Plant-Strong and The Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet.
His presentation will be followed at 8pm with a panel Q&A featuring three notable local nutrition experts — Dr. Jyothi Rao of Shakthi Health and Wellness Center, pediatrician Dr. Lisa LaBorwit, and registered dietitian Melanie Berdyck of Giant Food.
