Kids can rejoice! Summertime is near, which means that it’s almost time to bid school work adieu and enjoy a couple months of fun in the sun. And there’s no better way for families to kick off the summer in Columbia than by going to KidsDay.

Now in its 12th year, KidsDay is one of Columbia Association’s biggest community events, attracting more than 2,000 kids and parents.

This year, KidsDay will take place on Saturday, June 9 from 10am to 2pm at Columbia SportsPark, 5453 Harpers Farm Road near the Harper’s Choice Village Center. The event includes a variety of activities that are free for everyone, including games, inflatables, arts and crafts, face painting, ZumbaⓇ for kids, demos and more.

Mini-golf and batting cages will be free for all kids 12 and younger, plus all CA Fit&Play, Golf Fit&Play, Play, and 5Day Golf&Play members. Non-members and other CA members who are 13 years and older require a fee. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase on the day of the event.

How KidsDay has grown up

The very first KidsDay launched in March 2006 and took place at Supreme Sports Club. It later moved to Hopewell Mini-WaterPark before finding its permanent home at CA’s expansive Columbia SportsPark.

Part of the reason for the move was the event’s growing attendance.

“This has become one of our biggest events,” said CA’s events coordinator, Christina Pierre. “It’s a great way for people in the community to get to know their neighbors and make new friends.”

Both Pierre and CA’s communications and media specialist, Keithan Samuels, are responsible for planning KidsDay and work to make sure the event gets better each year.

“We tend to get ideas for next year while we’re at KidsDay,” said Samuels. “We listen to the feedback from participants. We don’t wait to start coming up with ideas — we’re always looking for ways to improve the event next year.”

CA also emails a post-event survey to all attendees in order to gather feedback on what people enjoyed, as well as what they would like to see at future KidsDay events.

“Each time, we try to do something a little different,” said Samuels. “In recent years, we’ve had Michael Campanaro from the Baltimore Ravens make an appearance; we’ve had the Howard County Fire and Rescue Department show up with a fire truck for the kids to explore.”

With a great venue and powerful planning, there’s no doubt that this year’s KidsDay will be the best yet. And there’s plenty more family fun coming up this summer with CA. Learn more about CA’s youth programs, classes, camps and special offers by visiting ColumbiaAssociation.org.
