Splash it up! – Jan. 2018

Snack-n-Slide sessions are among one of several fun ways to make the most of a day off

By Tripp Laino, January 2018

SplashDown is one of the best ways to have fun in Columbia — the waterslides send you splish-splashing on an exhilarating path down one of two twisting, turning tubes.

We’ve found a way to make the experience even more fun!

One of the great ways to enjoy SplashDown is by setting a date for one of SplashDown’s Snack-n-Slide sessions, which are typically held on days when schools are scheduled to be closed.

The next Snack-n-Slide sessions will be held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 15) and Presidents Day (Monday, Feb. 19) from noon-4pm at Columbia Swim Center.

Admission includes chips, small drink and ice cream of choice — all for just $3 per person for CA Fit&Play, Play, 5Day Golf&Play, and Golf Fit&Play members. Other rates (per person) are $8 for other CA members, $13 for Columbia Cardholders and $18 for non-members. For more information, please call 410-730-7000.

SplashDown has been a staple of Columbia since its opening in 1986. It was rated one of the Top 10 Things to Do in the Washington area by The Washington Post, and continues to be honored each year in Howard Magazine’s “Best of Howard County” Readers’ Choice Awards.

SplashDown officially reopened in October 2016 with an increase in speed (it now takes between 15 to 17 seconds to go down one slide and 20 to 24 seconds to go down the other). You no longer have to lug a tube up the stairs — you just walk up and go down on your back.

But the slides are just one way to play at Columbia Swim Center. There’s also a snack bar, rope swing, diving board and recreational swimming in the program pool. Several aquatics classes are held throughout the week as well.

If you’re looking for some wet and wild fun for your next big event, both SplashDown and flat water rentals are available. SplashDown birthday parties can be reserved for Saturdays at 2 or 4pm, and on Sundays at noon or 2pm, for up to 20 participants. The parties include unlimited rides, drinks with unlimited refills, pizza, a decorated theme cake with candles, and ice cream.

You must be at least 4 feet tall to ride SplashDown, so — for children ages 6 and younger — our Little Splashers Party is also available, where kids can enjoy splashing fun in the wading pool.

More Ways to Have Fun When School’s Out

Several of CA’s facilities offer programs when schools are out, including Columbia Ice Rink (410-730-0321) and Columbia Skate Arena (410-381-5355), which often hold public skate sessions (call for further details).

Columbia Art Center’s School’s Out Program provides exciting days of creative fun, sending kids home with cool projects; check the article in this issue for further details.

KidSpace Adventure Day is a fun-filled day of games, arts and crafts, swimming, skating, and much more. Pizza lunch included. Offered on most days when Howard County public schools are out. The full day program (7am-6pm) is $55 per child; half day (9am-1pm) is $30 per child. For more information or to register, call one of CA’s KidSpace locations: Columbia Athletic Club (410-730-6755), Columbia Gym (410-531-8984) or Supreme Sports Club (410-381-7559).

School Age Services School’s Closed Programs remove the worry of school holidays. Children in grades K-8 can attend all-day sessions on school holidays. Includes field trips/projects. You don’t need to be enrolled in School Age Services Before and After Care to register for these programs. The full day program (7am-6pm) is $55 per child. Call 410-715-3164 for more information.
