CA is always working on ways to make Columbia a better place to live, work and play, but we’re pretty sure children are only focused on play.
Introduce your child to water adjustment, safety and the basics of swimming through a series of songs, games and interactive activities. Parent/caregiver participation is required with infants or toddlers who are not yet comfortable in the water and do not have the ability to hold themselves above the water or on the wall. Recommended for children ages 6 months to 3 years. Offered at Columbia Gym, Phelps Luck Pool and Swansfield Mini-WaterPark.
Children can learn to skate and hone their skills in hockey or figure skating from excellent instructors. Plus, public skating sessions are a perfect family activity. 5876 Thunder Hill Road.
Columbia SportsPark features an 18-hole mini-golf course, 10 batting cages, a clubhouse, two 600-foot pavilions, playground and a skate park with 15,000 square feet of quarter pipes, vert ramps and obstacles for skateboarding and inline skating.
This combination of soccer and golf is now available at Fairway Hills Golf Club! You play a real round of golf with a soccer ball by kicking the ball into 21-inch wide FootGolf holes. A CA-leased facility, Columbia Horse Center offers riding lessons in multiple disciplines for children ages 5 and up in a safe, relaxed environment.
Work up a sweat in the gym, then cool off in the pool. Child must wear bathing suit under clothes. Parents drop off at KidSpace and pick up by the pool. This program is available for children ages 3 to 6 (no diapers) and is offered Tuesdays 10am to noon at Supreme Sports Club (410-381-7559) and Thursdays 10am to noon at Columbia Gym (410-531-8984). This program is free for KidSpace members and $8 per child for all others.
Kids Fitness Events

CA offers martial arts classes for all ages at Columbia Gym and Columbia Athletic Club. You don’t have to be a CA member to take part! Martial Arts is a great way to instill discipline, self-respect and character development -while getting kids active. Click to view descriptions and schedules.
CA maintains more than 3,600 acres of Columbia’s open space, including more than 114 miles of pathways and sidewalks for walking, biking and jogging; 171 tot lots; 284 footbridges; three manmade lakes; 41 ponds; 34 miles of stream valleys; the 40-acre Symphony Woods; Wilde Lake Park; and the Lake Elkhorn Park and Pavilion.
CA operates 23 outdoor swimming pools (including two Mini WaterParks), an indoor swim center with a waterslide, plus two additional indoor swimming pools at Supreme Sports Club and Columbia Gym. Located at Supreme Sports Club, the Skate Arena has more than 12,000 square feet of pure maple wood and a state-of-the-art sound system to play the perfect tracks to keep you grooving while you skate. Available for rentals and open skate sessions.
The Junior Development program is aimed at developing skills for children who want
to learn the game of tennis. Featuring appropriately-scaled courts and equipment, children are able to hone their striking skills before moving up to adult-sized courts and equipment.
Toddler and Me
Water adjustment, safety and beginner swim skills are introduced through

Parent/caregiver participation is required with infants or toddlers who are not yet comfortable in the water, but have the ability to support themselves above the water with a float and on the wall with a parent/caregiver within arms reach. Recommended for children 2 to 6 years of age. Offered at Columbia Gym, Phelps Luck Pool and Swansfield Mini-WaterPark.
One of CA’s certified personal trainers will design a basic fitness routine for your child that includes a proper warmup and cooldown, cardiovascular exercise and strength training. Trainers explain club policies and gym etiquette, as well as explain workouts while parents supervise. Although youth members will be encouraged to use all areas of the gym floor, the free weight areas and participation in group exercise programming are restricted until child is 14 years of age.
In addition to being a top-notch destination for research about Columbia, Columbia Archives also hosts the annual Columbia BikeAbout and holds shorter family-friendly bike rides.
First Tee of Howard County
Located at Fairway Hills Golf Club, First Tee is a World Golf Foundation initiative dedicated to teaching leadership skills and providing access to golf, with an emphasis on children who might not have the opportunity to experience it otherwise.
Typically held with a March deadline. This scholarship program offers up to six awards to graduating high school seniors who exhibit exceptional efforts in providing community service to benefit Columbia residents and those in the Columbia area.
Held annually in the summer, Columbia high school students travel to the sister cities of Cergy-Pontoise, France, Tres Cantos, Spain or Tema, Ghana for two weeks, then host their counterparts in Columbia for two weeks.
All Together Now
Available at Supreme Sports Club and designed for ages 3 to 5, this drop-in class is perfect for children and parents and/or grandparents to enjoy together. Come learn about your child’s world through books, songs and activities. Activities for each month will be based on books specifically selected and developed by Howard County Library System staff. Classes are held Fridays from 10:30-11:45am. Admission is free for KidSpace members and $8 per child for all others. For more information, call 410-381-7559.
Provided by CA’s School Age Services, these morning and afternoon programs offer elementary and middle school children a safe, secure haven at their school where they can explore, learn and have fun.
CA’s Camps offer more than a dozen options to make summer spectacular! Options include the always-popular Nature Camp (held at Lake Elkhorn and Wilde Lake Park), specialized sports camps like Grand Slam Tennis and Skateboard Camp and an altruistic option via Camp Make a Difference, so there’s something for all kids to enjoy.
With dozens of options for children to explore their artistic side and hone their skills, Columbia Art Center is a great location for young artists. Classes include painting, drawing, clay work and dozens of other disciplines. The Art Center also offers School’s Out programs.
Available at all three fitness clubs and Haven on the Lake, KidSpace is an interactive play area with amenities tailored to each facility including kid-sized arenas, a computer room, a rock wall, climbing ropes, state-of-the-art games and equipment.
A variety of fun activities and play encourage development of fine motor skills, as well as social, mental and physical development. This class is available for babies and toddlers ages 6 to 36 months. When school is out of session, CA offers parents and their elementary and middle school children options for days when school is out that provide safe, secure environments to explore, learn and have fun. Programs are hosted by Before and After School Care and are also available at some other CA facilities such as Columbia Art Center.
Sponsored by CA and held on the lawn at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront, the Lakefront Summer Festival offers great summer entertainment on a nightly basis from mid- June through late August, and into September on weekends. Admission is free and so is parking. Movies shown are suitable for families.
Not just for birthdays anymore! CA’s parties are a great way to celebrate any occasion! Featuring a variety of themes, locations and activities, CA has parties to fit any budget or style.

Hanging out at the Youth and Teen Center at The Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center is a fun, safe way for teens and preteens to socialize and participate in recreational and educational programs. Columbia and Howard County kids ages 9 to 18 are welcomed year-round with after-school, summertime and some weekend activities and programs designed to promote self-esteem and develop life skills.
(Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga) Offered at Haven on the Lake in beautiful Downtown Columbia, expectant and recent moms will enjoy various benefits of this class that encourages mind and body wellness. Baby Bliss prepares the body for labor and recovery and also will help you reclaim the energy and vitality that expectant and recent moms sometimes need. Baby Bliss combines controlled breathing, meditation and fundamental postures with gentle flowing movements. For your well-being and the well-being of your baby, consult your health care professional prior to engaging in class.
This 12-week, medical referral program focuses on pre- through postnatal health and is designed to make you and your baby healthier. Fitness, nutrition, and behavioral health professionals work closely with you and your obstetrics practitioner to assess your current level of health and to create a plan to improve your overall wellness.
